Here at Andrews we’ve seen it all when it comes to moving house. Here are a few of the questions that we get asked regularly so that you don’t have to. If however you have any other answers you require the answer to, don’t hesitate to get in touch on 0333 200 1323.
Should my freezer be emptied before the move?
For local moves your frozen food will normally be safe to remain in the freezer for up to 4 hours without causing a problem for our removals team. The fridge freezer will normally be the last thing to be unplugged and put on the van, meaning it will be the first thing off the van when we arrive.
One thing to remember however is that fridge freezers use gas and oils within their cooling mechanism. For this reason you should wait at least an hour for the fridge to settle before switching it on. Although it’s very rare fridges have been known to explode in the past following house moves – not with us we should add!
People moving long distance should start working their way through their frozen food in the run up to moving. We also appreciate de frosting the freezer and turning it off prior to moving. This will prevent spillages in the van which could be a safety hazard.
How can my removal be made less stressful?
The key to a stress free removal all lies in the planning. This starts with choosing the day and time of your removal (if possible). Fridays are traditionally busy, whilst trying to manoeuvre through rush hour traffic can hold up proceedings somewhat.
You should also make sure that you are dealing with a fully insured removals company who can deal with any damage arising to your property or possessions. We’re covered for most things, but if you have any extraordinary items it’s best to tell us first.
Packing and preparing in whatever way you can as far ahead of your moving day will make the day itself less stressful. We offer professional packing on the day of your removal and this is another great way to delegate the extra hassle.

How much will my removal cost?
In order to determine an accurate cost for your removal we suggest arranging for us to visit your home as there are many factors involved, such as, number of staff required, size of vehicle, materials, access, etc. With all this information to hand it allows us to provide you with an accurate quotation tailored to your specific needs.
How much notice is required for a booking?
Household removals are usually booked between 7-14 days before the completion date.
How can I pay?
A deposit is required at the time of booking; which is transferable should you need to reschedule your removal date providing 48 hours’ notice is given. Full payment is payable 3 days prior to removal by credit/debit card over the telephone, in person, or via online transfer. Please note there is a 2% administration charge on credit cards. Debit cards are free of charge.
What areas do you cover?
We are based in Sheffield, our locality ensure we can offer removals in Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield, Mansfield, and surrounding areas. Whilst many of our successful removals are local to us, we cover the whole of the United Kingdom.
Do I need to unpack my chest of drawers?
This all depends on the type of items inside the drawers and the sturdiness of the furniture itself. If you are talking about a high quality chest of drawers then you will usually be ok to leave clothing in the drawers and we will move it. Heavier items should be packed separately no matter how good the furniture is.
If it’s self-assembly flat pack furniture that you have put together yourself, then you should only move these when empty. In our experience these items do not respond well to moving and any extra weight may only compound the problem.
Do you dismantle and re-assemble my furniture?
This phase of the removals process will be agreed at the quotation stage as it will be factored into the cost and time for the move. If you have not opted for our dismantle and reassembly service then you will have to do this prior to your arrival. We will ask you about this service at the quotation stage, but it’s important that you let us know about it so that we can factor it into our cost.
What size are your vehicles?
We have a range of vehicles from 3.5 ton vans to 15 ton removal transporters. They are kept to a very high standard and are inspected every 8 weeks in line with the ministry of transport requirements. Our experienced surveyor will ask you about any access issues at your new property before we can provide a quotation. If we are not informed about any access issues it can disrupt the move considerably. If advised we can better prepare and send smaller vehicles to unload into (tranship) from the large vehicle solving any problems.
When should I request a quote?
It’s never too early! You can request your survey at any time in the lead up to your move, you don’t even have to wait until you have a moving date. Our quotations are valid for 1 month, allowing you plenty of time to shop around before agreeing the move and helping your prepare for the day.
How much will the survey cost?
Our survey is carried out free of charge.
What happens if we book a date and then we have to change it?
This is a common issue and isn’t a problem. We will do our best to accommodate your new moving date. Provided we have 48 hours’ notice of a change your deposit would be transferred. Changes generally only occur if you haven’t exchanged contracts and it is therefore a good idea to ensure a sensible gap between exchange and completion.
What would happen if we couldn’t get into our new house because our completion couldn’t go through?
This is a very rare occurrence that often only happens if you are trying to exchange and complete on the same day. However, we do have a protocol for dealing with this problem. We’ll leave your goods in a lorry overnight in our secure compound where it will be locked until your goods were needed the next day. Your goods would be stored in our facility at our daily storage rate.
Is there any work that you will not do?
We will not remove or fix anything to the walls; we will not carry out electrical, plumbing or gas work. We will only enter lofts or cellars if it has been agreed in advanced and there is good access, lighting and flooring.
What if the surveyor gets the size of the job wrong?
The bottom line is that there would be no additional charge to you. Andrews Removals always carry out a site survey so this would be very unlikely. If it were to occur we would complete your move in a professional manner in a reasonable time frame, using additional vehicles if necessary.
